DEVELOPING SCIENCE LITERACY PERFORMANCE TASKS FOR 6TH GRADE WEATHER UNIT

Open to: Middle School Science Teachers.

Opportunity at a Glance: During this two-day professional learning institute at the NYC Center for Space Science Education, 6th grade teachers (or any middle school teacher who teaches a weather unit) will learn how to integrate inquiry based activities and performance tasks into their Weather unit; how to support effective disciplinary literacy practices in the science classroom; how students can authentically use data they collect on field trips; and how to look at student work to evaluate students’ learning and the success of performance tasks. Teachers who participate in this professional development will receive free classroom materials to implement the six-week performance task, one free class trip, and per diem substitute reimbursement for the school. All participants are required to bring at least one class to the NYC Center for Space Science Education for a class trip to collect data for their performance task.

Key dates: Wednesday, December 21, and Tuesday, January 10, 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (accepted participants are expected to attend both sessions).
