Summer Opportunities for Teachers

SUMMER STEM INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS
The 2015 Summer STEM Institute will partner NYCDOE educators with STEM education innovators to support the development of STEM educational programs for all students.  The Institute will serve to support work within and among schools in grades K-12 in collaboration with the STEM education innovators.  As schools initiate partnerships, we will look to support continued efforts during the school day as well as beyond the school day to strengthen the City’s STEM initiative.

During the professional development sessions, teacher teams will have an opportunity to:
●             Develop a shared understanding of the important features of STEM education
●             Develop an awareness of different approaches to STEM education
●             Build their leadership capacity to support and implement STEM education and instructional strategies within their school communities
●             Build an ongoing theme-based collaborative community of schools to support STEM education

STEM presenters will be called upon to emphasize how the professional development sessions will enhance the participating educators’ content knowledge and skills leading to increased student learning and engagement towards the support of a STEM-literate society.

The NYCDOE is pleased to offer a two-day K–5 Mathematics Institute, entitled Introduction to RTI in Mathematics.  With expert Kate Garnett of Hunter College, we will be exploring what RTI in Mathematics is all about and how might it look across elementary schools.  We will also be exploring effective Tier I teaching, grouping, and practices, all through the lens of different math difficulties. Teachers who participate in this institute will have opportunities to build a shared understanding of RTI and will identify strategies that can help them adjust lessons and tasks to support learning of all students.

Introduction to RTI in Mathematics Institute
This Mathematics Institute will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on June 29th and 30th. Teachers who participate will be paid at the per session rate for a total of 10 hours upon completion of this two-day institute.
